The theological thought of Psellus is an issue that has re-peatedly solicited research, by causing conflicting positions. Researchers have seen him as an undisputed follower of or-thodoxy 2 , as well as a Pagan 3 . His works also abound in form-malities provided to retrieve information regarding his attitude towards the Divine, as well as his view about the relationship of philosophy and theology 4 . The Chronographia is a philo-sophical work, in which the search for truth, which Psellus of-ten proclaims as his goal 5 , interweaves with formulaic clues which reveal his beliefs about the role of the Divine in human life and the ability of human beings to act freely. The aim of the article is to explore the role that Psellus gives to the Divine in the sequence of events in the Chronographia, together with the views expressed in his works, especially in De omnifaria doc-trina , in an attempt to highlight the Chronographia’s message. We can find the clarification of Psellus’ views on the role of the Divine Providence in human life in the last chapter of Chronographia where speaking of the entrance of Isaac Com-nenus into Constantinople on August 31, 1057, after his victo-ry against his predecessor, Michael VI, Michael Psellus quotes the fears that the new Emperor expressed to him regarding the future. Psellus, with regard to the reservations of the modest and not arrogant Isaac, about the extremely fragile nature of his ex-cessive happiness, concerning which he did not know if it would have a positive outcome 6 , after he first cited the relevant content of Greek doctrines , he acknowledged the philosophical mood of the new ruler and expressed his personal opinion on the role of the Divine in human life and the ability of man to determine his future with his actions 7 . The relevant passage, in our view, in-corporates the core of his thought, based on which he incurred the criticism of the descendants of Basil II in Chronographia...
